From Sales Rep to Software Engineer: Eric Alli-Balogun’s Journey of Transformation
Before code and computers, there was hustle — long days as a young sales rep, earning little and giving everything. Eric Alli-Balogun was the youngest in the store, often overlooked, underpaid, and overworked. “I knew I wanted more from life,” he recalls, “but I didn’t know what that ‘more’ looked like.”
After finishing his WAEC exams during the COVID-19 pandemic, Eric jumped into work to help himself and his family. But after months of exploitation and exhaustion, he made a bold choice to quit, with no clear plan, only a fragile hope that life could be different.
That hope turned into a defining moment when his brother told him about Semicolon’s Techpreneurship Program. “I didn’t know what to expect,” he says, “but I said yes — scared, but determined.” That “yes” changed everything.
Semicolon’s one-year, full-time program introduced him to a new world: building apps, websites, and scalable platforms; learning to solve problems with code; and discovering a community that pushed him through sleepless nights and self-doubt. “There were tough moments — nights when I cried in the toilet,” he laughs, “but the people around me made me believe I could do this.”
Over time, the fear faded and confidence grew. Through hands-on projects, real-world challenges, and constant mentorship, Eric transformed from a beginner to a software engineer. He didn’t just learn to code — he learned to think, lead, and create.
Today, he has completed his internship at Springcore Africa as a Java Backend Engineer and is already building solutions that make an impact. “This milestone isn’t the end,” he says, “it’s just the beginning of doing greater things.”
